PUBLICATION ETHICS & INTEGRITY

Correction and Retraction Policy

Community Education Engagement Journal (CEEJ) is committed to maintaining the accuracy, transparency, and integrity of the scholarly record. This policy outlines how published articles are corrected or retracted when significant errors or concerns are identified.

COMMUNITY EDUCATION ENGAGEMENT JOURNAL | CORRECTION & RETRACTION
OUR COMMITMENT

CEEJ recognizes that the publication record may occasionally require correction or formal action after publication. All concerns will be assessed fairly and confidentially, with decisions based on the nature and significance of the evidence, the reliability of the article, and applicable publication ethics standards.

01

Purpose and Scope

This policy applies to articles published in CEEJ and covers post-publication corrections, retractions, and expressions of concern. It applies when authors, readers, reviewers, editors, institutions, or other relevant parties raise credible concerns about the accuracy, integrity, or ethical acceptability of a published article.

The journal aims to correct the scholarly record promptly when justified, while ensuring that editorial decisions are proportionate, documented, and independent of commercial or personal interests.

02

Corrections

A correction may be issued when a published article contains an error that can be amended without invalidating its principal findings, interpretations, or scholarly contribution.

CORRECTION TYPE 01

Minor or Non-Substantive Errors

Examples may include typographical errors, incorrect affiliations, metadata inaccuracies, or other mistakes that do not materially affect the meaning or reliability of the article. The journal will determine whether a formal correction notice is necessary.

CORRECTION TYPE 02

Substantive Correction

Errors in data, tables, figures, methods, references, or reporting that affect interpretation may require a formal correction notice if the article remains reliable after the error is addressed.

Correction notice: A correction notice will identify the affected article, describe the error and its correction, and explain any implications for the article's interpretation. Where feasible, the notice will be linked to the original article, and the online version will be updated transparently.
03

Retraction

Retraction may be considered when the evidence indicates that a published article is unreliable or that serious ethical or publication misconduct has occurred. Retraction is intended to correct the scholarly record, not to punish an author.

Grounds for retraction may include, but are not limited to, the following:

01. Fabrication or falsification of research data or results.
02. Plagiarism or substantial unattributed duplication.
03. Serious errors that invalidate the main findings or conclusions.
04. Improper or unethical research practices that undermine the validity or legitimacy of the work.
05. Duplicate or redundant publication that materially compromises the publication record.
06. Evidence of manipulated peer review or other serious publication misconduct.
07. Unauthorized use of data, substantial authorship-related misconduct, or other serious ethical violations when these undermine the integrity of the publication.

Retraction will be considered only after an appropriate assessment of the available evidence. Where possible, the journal will seek relevant explanations from the authors and, when appropriate, consult the authors' institutions or other competent bodies.

04

Expression of Concern

CEEJ may publish an expression of concern when credible indications of a potentially serious problem exist, but the available evidence is insufficient to reach a final decision or an investigation remains unresolved.

Purpose of the Notice

An expression of concern alerts readers to the issue while further clarification is sought. It does not, by itself, establish that misconduct has occurred. The journal may update the notice when additional evidence becomes available and a final decision is made.

05

Assessment and Editorial Procedure

Concerns about a published article should be submitted to the journal through its official editorial contact channels. The submission should identify the article, explain the concern clearly, and provide supporting information or evidence where available.

STAGE 01

Receipt and Initial Screening

The editorial team records the concern and assesses whether it is sufficiently specific and relevant to warrant further review.

STAGE 02

Evidence Assessment

The editor examines the available evidence and may request clarification, supporting documents, or an explanation from the authors or other relevant parties.

STAGE 03

Consultation, Where Necessary

For complex or serious matters, the journal may consult independent experts, the authors' institutions, or other appropriate bodies.

STAGE 04

Editorial Decision

Based on the evidence, the journal determines whether no action, a correction, an expression of concern, or a retraction is warranted.

STAGE 05

Publication and Record Maintenance

When a formal notice is issued, the journal aims to make it identifiable, accessible, and linked to the affected article. The decision and its rationale are documented internally.

Fairness and independence: The journal seeks input from relevant parties before making a decision when appropriate. An author's disagreement or failure to respond does not, by itself, determine the outcome; decisions are based on the evidence available.
06

Retraction Notices and Article Availability

When an article is retracted, CEEJ will publish a clearly identifiable retraction notice explaining the reason for the action to the extent that it can be disclosed appropriately. The notice should identify the affected article and provide a transparent explanation of the basis for retraction.

REQUIREMENT 01

The retraction notice should be linked to the original article.

REQUIREMENT 02

The article's status should be clearly indicated in the online record.

REQUIREMENT 03

The original article will generally remain accessible with a clear retraction marking, rather than being silently removed, unless legal, privacy, or other exceptional considerations require a different approach.

REQUIREMENT 04

Relevant metadata and indexing services may be notified where appropriate and technically possible.

Preservation of the scholarly record: CEEJ will not silently replace or remove a published article in a way that obscures a substantive change to the scholarly record.
07

Responsibilities of Authors and Readers

AUTHOR RESPONSIBILITY

Authors

Authors are expected to notify the journal promptly if they discover a material error in their published work and to cooperate reasonably with an editorial assessment.

READER RESPONSIBILITY

Readers and Concerned Parties

Readers and other concerned parties are encouraged to provide specific, evidence-based information and to avoid unsupported allegations or public disclosure of confidential information obtained during an editorial process.

EDITORIAL RESPONSIBILITY

Editorial Team

The editorial team is responsible for assessing concerns impartially, protecting confidential information where appropriate, documenting decisions, and taking action proportionate to the evidence.

08

Confidentiality, Appeals, and Timeliness

CEEJ handles reports and supporting information with appropriate confidentiality, subject to the requirements of a fair investigation, applicable law, and legitimate requests from relevant institutions. Information will be shared only as necessary to assess and address the concern.

Authors or other directly affected parties may submit a reasoned appeal if they believe an editorial decision was based on a factual error, an unfair procedure, or material evidence that was not considered. Appeals will be reviewed by the editor or an appropriate independent editorial representative who is not directly conflicted by the case.

The time required to resolve a case depends on its complexity, the availability of evidence, and the need for external consultation. The journal aims to handle cases without unnecessary delay but does not guarantee a fixed resolution period.

09

Ethical Framework

CEEJ seeks to align its handling of corrections, retractions, and expressions of concern with recognized publication ethics principles, including guidance from the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), where applicable.

Further information is available from the COPE Retraction Guidelines. The journal may also refer to other relevant COPE resources when evaluating specific cases.
