Abstract

Purpose: This paper investigates the mediating effect of dynamic capability on social mission, social change-making and community empowerment in North-West Nigeria. It also examines the direct effect of social mission and social change-making on community empowerment.

Design/methodology/approach: This study used a quantitative survey with a structured questionnaire of 462 respondents from seven states in North-West Nigeria, including community leaders, CDA/CDS leaders, employees, beneficiaries, and informed household members; data were analysed using descriptive statistics and PLS-SEM.

Findings: The findings show that social mission and social change-making have significant direct and indirect effects on community empowerment through dynamic capability, highlighting it as a key mechanism in strengthening social entrepreneurship’s contribution in North-West Nigeria.

Limitations and Research implications: This study examined social mission, social change-making, and community empowerment through dynamic capability in North-West Nigeria; while the sample may introduce bias and limit generalisability, the findings emphasise the need to strengthen dynamic capabilities in social enterprises to enhance community empowerment.

Practical Implications: The findings suggest that social enterprises should strengthen their social mission and build dynamic capabilities to maximise community empowerment, as these capabilities enhance the effectiveness of social initiatives and support sustainable community-based interventions.

Originality/value: This study shows that social mission and social change-making enhance community empowerment through dynamic capability, driven by organisations’ ability to adapt and reconfigure capabilities into sustainable outcomes.
