ABOUT MANUSCRIPT CATEGORIES

UIR Law Review publishes scholarly contributions to legal studies, including civil law, criminal law, constitutional and administrative law, customary institutions, religious jurisprudence, international legal regimes, legal pluralism, and contemporary legal scholarship. The journal welcomes original research that advances legal knowledge and review articles that critically synthesize existing legal scholarship. All submissions must demonstrate academic rigor, a clear analytical focus, and relevance to the journal's scope.

01

Accepted Manuscript Types

UIR Law Review accepts two main manuscript types. Authors should select the category that best reflects the primary purpose, methodology, and contribution of their submission.

01

Original Research Article

Original Analysis & Findings

An original research article presents a new legal analysis, argument, interpretation, empirical finding, or theoretical contribution. The manuscript must address a clearly defined legal problem and demonstrate an original contribution to legal scholarship.

Research Approaches
  • Doctrinal or normative legal research
  • Empirical legal research
  • Comparative legal research
  • Socio-legal research
  • Constitutional, administrative, civil, and criminal law research
  • International law and legal pluralism research
  • Conceptual and theoretical legal analysis
Expected contribution: An original legal argument or finding, rigorous analysis of relevant legal sources or empirical evidence, and clear implications for legal theory, policy, institutions, or practice.
02

Review Article

Critical Synthesis & Evaluation

A review article critically examines, synthesizes, and evaluates existing scholarly literature on a relevant legal topic. It should identify major developments, debates, patterns, limitations, or research gaps and provide an analytical contribution beyond a descriptive summary.

Review Approaches
  • Systematic Literature Review (SLR)
  • Scoping Review
  • Critical or Integrative Review
  • Bibliometric Review of Legal Scholarship
  • Comparative Review of Legal Literature
Expected contribution: A transparent and appropriate review method, critical synthesis of relevant literature, identification of debates or research gaps, and clear implications for future legal scholarship or practice.
Classification note: Doctrinal, empirical, comparative, socio-legal, and theoretical approaches are research approaches within the Original Research Article category, not separate manuscript types. Systematic, scoping, critical, integrative, and bibliometric reviews are approaches within the Review Article category.
02

General Manuscript Requirements

All submissions, regardless of category, must meet the journal's academic, ethical, and editorial standards.

  • A clearly defined legal problem, research question, or review objective.
  • A strong rationale and relevant theoretical, conceptual, doctrinal, or evidence-based foundation.
  • An appropriate and sufficiently described research or review methodology.
  • Critical engagement with legislation, judicial decisions, legal documents, scholarly literature, or empirical evidence, as appropriate.
  • A coherent analysis that directly addresses the research question or review objective.
  • Clear conclusions that follow from the analysis and identify the manuscript's contribution.
  • Accurate citations, appropriate references, and compliance with publication ethics.
  • Ethical consideration, informed consent, or institutional approval where required by the nature of the research.
Important: Original research must demonstrate an original scholarly contribution. Review articles must provide critical synthesis and evaluation of existing literature rather than merely listing or summarizing previous publications.
03

Manuscript Structure

The manuscript structure should reflect the selected article type and research approach. Authors must consult the journal's official Author Guidelines for detailed formatting, citation style, abstract, keywords, and submission requirements.

Original Research Article

A typical structure includes Introduction, Research Method, Results or Legal Analysis, Discussion, Conclusion, and References. For doctrinal legal research, the analysis may be organized around legal issues, applicable norms, judicial decisions, and legal arguments. Empirical studies should describe their data sources and analytical procedures.

Review Article

A typical structure includes Introduction, Review Method, Results or Literature Synthesis, Critical Discussion, Research Gaps or Implications, Conclusion, and References. Systematic and scoping reviews should explain their search strategy, eligibility criteria, selection process, and synthesis method, as appropriate to the review design.

These structures are general recommendations. Authors should adapt the organization to the nature of their work while complying with the journal's official Author Guidelines.

04

Editorial Assessment and Peer Review

All submissions are subject to an initial editorial assessment to determine their relevance to UIR Law Review's scope, originality, completeness, analytical quality, methodological appropriateness, ethical compliance, and adherence to submission requirements.

Manuscripts considered suitable may proceed to peer review in accordance with the journal's editorial and peer-review policies. Classification as an Original Research Article or Review Article does not guarantee acceptance or publication.

Editorial discretion: UIR Law Review reserves the right to determine the appropriate manuscript classification, request revisions, or decline submissions that do not meet the journal's scope or publication standards.
05

Before Submission

Before submitting a manuscript, authors should:

  • Confirm that the manuscript falls within the journal's Focus and Scope.
  • Select the appropriate category: Original Research Article or Review Article.
  • Review the journal's official Author Guidelines, manuscript template, and submission checklist.
  • Ensure that authorship, ethical, funding, and conflict-of-interest declarations are complete.

  • Check the accuracy of legal sources, case citations, legislation, and scholarly references.
  • For review articles, ensure that the literature search and synthesis are sufficiently transparent for the selected review approach.
