Abstract

In the science learning process regarding temperature, heat and expansion, some students do not understand the material well and students' critical thinking skills are still low. This research was conducted in class VII-B of SMPN 1 Siak Hulu. This is shown by the results of observations in the Pre-Cycle which were carried out only 6 students who completed it with a percentage of 18.75%. This Classroom Action Research aims to determine the effect of applying the Problem Based Learning model regarding temperature, heat and expansion on students' critical thinking abilities. This classroom action research was carried out through 2 cycles with 4 stages, namely planning, acting, observing and reflecting. The results of data analysis are known through the calculation of the N-Gain formula with an increase in pre-cycle to cycle I of 0.13 in the low category. Furthermore, in cycle I to cycle II, the N-Gain value was obtained at 0.58 in the medium category. Thus, the application of the Problem Based Learning model can improve students' critical thinking skills, especially in the material of temperature, heat and expansion
