Letters and Comments
Concise, evidence-based communications that raise substantive questions, offer critical observations, or clarify an argument presented in a published article.
A transparent framework for scholarly discussion, critical evaluation, author responses, and the correction of the scientific record after publication in biology and education research.
Biology and Education Journal (BaEJ) recognizes that scholarly communication continues after an article has been published. Constructive post-publication discussion allows readers, researchers, educators, and authors to examine findings, clarify interpretations, identify limitations, and contribute to the continued development of knowledge in biology and education.
BaEJ supports responsible, evidence-based discussion of published articles. Post-publication communications should contribute meaningfully to scholarly understanding and maintain professional standards of accuracy, fairness, transparency, and respect.
Discussion may address research methodology, data interpretation, theoretical arguments, biological processes, teaching and learning approaches, educational interventions, research ethics, reproducibility, limitations, or the practical implications of published findings.
Concise, evidence-based communications that raise substantive questions, offer critical observations, or clarify an argument presented in a published article.
Responses that address questions or criticisms raised by readers and provide clarification, additional context, or supporting evidence.
Substantive concerns regarding data accuracy, methodology, ethical compliance, originality, or the reliability of published findings.
Communications that may lead to a correction, expression of concern, or retraction when warranted by the available evidence.
Individuals wishing to submit a post-publication comment or scholarly response should provide sufficient information for the editorial team to assess the communication.
All proposed post-publication communications are subject to editorial assessment. BaEJ may evaluate whether a submission is relevant, sufficiently substantiated, constructive, and appropriate for publication.
The editor checks relevance, clarity, supporting evidence, ethical considerations, and compliance with the journal's policies.
Where necessary, the editor may seek advice from qualified reviewers or subject experts.
When appropriate, the authors of the original article may be invited to respond to substantive criticism before an editorial decision is made.
The editor determines whether the communication should be accepted, revised, declined, or referred for further assessment under another journal policy.
Where a published article is subject to substantive scholarly criticism, BaEJ may invite the original authors to submit a response. The response should address the issues raised directly and provide relevant evidence or clarification.
The journal aims to handle comments and responses fairly. Publication of a comment does not necessarily imply agreement by the editorial team with every argument presented, and a response does not automatically invalidate the original findings.
If post-publication discussion identifies a possible error or concern affecting the reliability, integrity, or interpretation of an article, BaEJ will assess the matter under its relevant editorial and publication ethics policies.
May be issued when a specific error requires correction to preserve the accuracy of the published record.
May be considered when serious concerns require further assessment and the available evidence is not yet sufficient for a final determination.
May be considered when findings are unreliable or serious ethical or publication problems justify retraction under applicable guidance.
May be used when additional explanation is necessary to clarify the publication record without requiring a formal correction or retraction.
Any action will be proportionate to the nature of the concern and supported by appropriate evidence. The journal may contact authors or relevant institutions when necessary.
Post-publication discussion must be conducted in good faith and must not be used to harass individuals, disclose confidential information, make knowingly false allegations, or misrepresent published evidence.
If a post-publication comment or response is accepted, BaEJ may publish it as a separate scholarly item or use another appropriate format supported by the journal. Where technically feasible, the communication should be linked to the original article to support transparency and discoverability.
The journal's publication decisions remain subject to editorial assessment, available publishing infrastructure, and applicable publication ethics standards.
Biology and Education Journal recognizes constructive post-publication discussion as an important part of scholarly communication. Through fair assessment, transparent responses, and appropriate correction of the published record, the journal seeks to support research integrity and the responsible advancement of knowledge.
This policy should be read alongside BaEJ's policies on research misconduct, corrections and retractions, and conflicts of interest.
