Abstract

Background: Swamps are ecologically important ecosystems in the biogeochemical cycle and are one of the targets of land conversion for food estate development. Objective: This study aims to examine the impact of the minipolder system on soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks in the Food Estate area of Sambang Lihumm Banjar Regency, South Kalimantan. Methods: Soil sampling was conducted using a purposive sampling method in natural swamp (control) and tukungan plots (maize cultivation). The soil samples consisting of intact and disturbed were collected, with parameters analyzed including soil moisture content (gravimetric method), bulk density (gravimetric method), and %C-organic (Walkley and Black method). Results: The result of study showed that conversion of swamp to dry land agriculture reduced soil moisture content, while bulk density increased from 0.78 gram/cm3 to 1.19 gram/cm3. Furthermore, SCO stocks averaged 35.00 ton/ha in natural swamp and 37.73 ton/ha in tukungan. Conclusions: The conclusion of study is that the increased bulk density and accumulation of topsoil in tukungan contributed to higher soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks.
