Abstract

Surfactants and glycerol are chemicals that are always present in cleaning products such as soap and detergent. Understanding surfactants and glycerol in cleaning product applications will provide information to which these two chemicals affect soap and detergent cleaning products. This paper reviews the role and benefits of surfactants and glycerol in cleaning products, especially soap and detergent. Surfactants have two groups at the end of their molecules, namely hydrophilic and hydrophobic groups that can be used as cleaning media. Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) and methyl ester sulfonate (MES) are two types of surfactants that are most widely used in the cleaning product industry. According to its nature, MES is more environmentally friendly than SLS. While glycerol is an additional ingredient that was often mixed in the soap and detergent production process. Several oleochemical processes such as saponification, transesterification and fat splitting can produce glycerol. In soap production, glycerol can be used as a humectant or moisturizer that can maintain skin health. While in detergent production, glycerol can affect the detergent cleaning process.
