The growing interest of tourists in Mentawai culture has led to the emergence of various traditional tourism programs that showcase the customs, rituals, and daily life of the local community. In this context, cross-cultural communication becomes an important element that determines the success of conveying the authentic cultural values of Mentawai to tourists from various backgrounds. This study aims to analyze how cross-cultural communication occurs in Mentawai traditional tourism through the collaboration of three main actors, namely Sikerei as the owner of cultural authority, visitors as a tourist, and tour guides as the bridge of interaction between Mentawai culture and tourists.
The research used a qualitative-descriptive approach with in-depth interview techniques, participant observation, and field documentation. There were five informants, consisting of three Sikerei who were directly involved in cultural performances, one immigrant who managed tourism activities, and one tour guide who interacted intensively with tourists. The results of the study show that cross-cultural communication in Mentawai traditional tourism occurs in three ways, namely: First, explaining cultural meanings, which is when tour guides help tourists understand the meaning of Mentawai rituals, movements, and cultural symbols. Second, adapted cultural performances, where Sikerei present their traditions in a way that is easier for tourists to understand without changing their core values. Third, cooperation in conveying culture, where visitors and tourism operators help regulate how culture is presented so that it remains interesting while preserving its authenticity and not losing its important meaning.
