Abstract

This study aims to analyze the role of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in addressing global drug trafficking, with a case study focused on Mexico as one of the regions with the highest levels of drug circulation in the world. Mexico holds a strategic position as a major transit point in international drug trafficking, involving powerful cartels such as Sinaloa and CJNG. In this context, UNODC plays a vital role through various strategic programs, including training law enforcement personnel, providing assistance in the formulation of national policies, strengthening border detection and surveillance systems, and developing community-based rehabilitation programs. This research uses a qualitative approach with literature study and descriptive analysis methods, supported by secondary data from official UNODC reports, academic journals, and other international institutional sources. The findings indicate that UNODC has made significant contributions to institutional strengthening and the reduction of drug use in several regions of Mexico. However, the effectiveness of UNODC programs still faces major obstacles, such as high levels of corruption, weak local legal systems, and violence resulting from inter-cartel conflicts. Therefore, efforts to combat drug trafficking require a multidimensional approach and more integrated international cooperation to produce sustainable impact.
