Abstract

Beef cattle farming is generally carried out by farmers on a relatively small and traditional scale. In addition, this activity is often considered only a side business for cattle farmers. Nevertheless, cattle farming remains quite popular, particularly in Siak Regency. This study aims to (1) identify the characteristics of farmers and the profile of beef cattle enterprises, (2) examine beef cattle farming techniques, and (3) determine the income of beef cattle farmers. The study was conducted over six months, from December 2024 to May 2025, using a survey method with six respondents selected through purposive sampling. The results show that the average age of the farmers falls within the productive age group, at 53.33 years, with an average education level of 10.00 years, an average farming experience of 16.33 years, an average family size of 3.33 persons, and an average ownership of 3.67 cattle per farmer. Beef cattle management practices carried out by the farmers include feeding, cleaning the barn, bathing the cattle, weighing, disease control, and determining the age of the cattle. The income from beef cattle farming using a confined housing system in Kerinci Kanan District, Siak Regency, amounts to IDR 249,011,685 per 12-month period, or IDR 41,501,948 per respondent per 12-month period.
