Abstract

This study aims to develop and evaluate the effectiveness of a physical activity model focused on spatial understanding and exploration for Early Childhood Education students in Yogyakarta City. The physical activities were designed to enhance gross motor skills, spatial awareness, and exploratory abilities. This research employed a simplified version of the Borg and Gall Research & Development (R&D) method, consisting of four stages: information gathering, initial product development, operational field testing, and final product revision. The study subjects comprised 64 students from four public kindergartens in Yogyakarta. The quality of the physical activity model was assessed using validation questionnaires completed by experts and observation sheets used to measure student participation. Validation results indicated that the developed model achieved an Aiken’s V score of 0.90, demonstrating excellent feasibility. Data from the field trials, analysed using a dependent t-test, revealed a significance value of 0.00, indicating a significant increase in student participation following the implementation of the spatial understanding and exploration physical activities. Based on the validation and field trial data analysis, it can be concluded that the physical activity model for spatial learning and exploration is suitable for use as an alternative material for physical activity in early childhood education in Yogyakarta City.
